These physical techniquesare well-designed and effective for MF.In electric fusion, cells or liposomes/vesicles are collected by electrophoresisto form a pair of particles, and MF is triggered by an irreversibleelectric breakdown of the membrane at the point of contact of thepair.5 In the laser method, cells are trappedand manipulated to form a pair at the focal point, and then, the contactarea is irradiated by a pulsed laser beam to destroy and fuse themembranes together.9 In the method usingplasmonic heating,7 a gold nanoparticle,laser-trapped and positioned between a couple of cells or vesicles,is laser-heated to induce MF. All these MF methods consist of twosteps. The first step is transportation/manipulation of particles(cells, liposomes, vesicles, etc.) to make contact with each other.The second step is the application of a voltage or laser irradiationto induce MF at the point of contact. It should be noted that Bolognesiet al. recently demonstrated that an optical tweezer is a powerfultool for fusing biomimetic vesicle networks.10

I did a tour of Long Bing with the First Signal Brigade in 1971 and 1972 as a Company Clerk. Great base had everything. Restaurants, PX, basketball courts, live bands at the EM club and outdoor pools and movies. Saigon was off limits but I managed to get their several times by bus and returned by helicopter. Had to visit LBJ jail several times for work. Lots of heroin abuse. Lots of pot smoking and it was free for the most part.

The record section of the vertical-component velocity traces (Fig. 11) at the station locations of High Sensitivity Seismograph Network Japan (Hi-net) operated by National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (Okada et al. 2004) shows very complicated waves as a result of propagation in the heterogeneous structure. In particular, there are significant wave packets after the arrival of dispersive surface waves at epicentral distances over 500 km that seem to be incoherent in neighboring stations. The development of this peculiar wave packet is clearly seen in the snapshots of the seismic wave propagation shown in Fig. 12. It is demonstrated that the direct waves were first radiated from the epicenter and then were trapped in the very low-wavespeed layer of the accretionary prism, which was formed by the subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate (mark A). Then, part of the trapped seismic wave energy was released from the accretionary prism and propagated back to the Japanese Archipelago (marks B and C), as demonstrated by Furumura et al. (2008) and Guo et al. (2016). As a result, apparently incoherent arrivals appear in the record section (Fig. 11) due to significant off-great-circle propagation.
